The Impact of Remote Work on Freelancing Careers in Digital Marketing
Overview
This mixed-methods study investigates how remote freelancing affects work-life balance and income stability for digital marketing professionals on platforms like Upwork and Fiverr. The research reveals that while remote work offers flexibility and global client access, these benefits are offset by algorithmic control, income volatility, and precarity, particularly in creative roles.

Abstract
Remote freelancing on digital platforms promises flexibility and global client access for digital marketing professionals, yet existing literature consistently reveals algorithmic control, income volatility, and diminished work-life balance. Despite extensive studies on general gig work, a critical gap remains: limited empirical focus on creative, client-facing digital marketing roles and the influence of emerging AI tools on autonomy and stability.
This mixed-methods study investigates the central question: To what extent does remote freelancing improve self-reported work-life balance while reducing income stability for digital marketing professionals? Quantitative data will be gathered through structured surveys (n = 50) measuring balance scores and earnings variability over 12 months, while qualitative open-ended responses will explore experiences with platform algorithms and AI integration.
Findings confirm that flexibility gains are offset by precarity and algorithmic pressures, particularly in creative roles. The study will contribute practical recommendations for platform design, policy support, and individual strategies, filling the identified literature gap and advancing understanding of sustainable remote careers in the digital marketing sector.
