Abstract: The Impact of Remote Work on Freelancing Careers in Digital Marketing

Remote freelancing on digital platforms promises flexibility and global opportunities for digital marketing professionals, yet literature consistently documents algorithmic control, opaque ratings, income volatility, and reduced work-life balance. While general gig economy studies highlight these challenges, a critical gap remains: limited empirical research on creative, client-facing digital marketing roles where project cycles, trend sensitivity, and AI integration create unique dynamics. This study investigates whether remote freelancing improves self-reported work-life balance while decreasing income stability. The general objective is to examine the overall impact on digital marketing freelancers. Specific objectives are to assess balance levels, measure income variability over 12 months, explore AI and algorithmic influences, and identify adaptive strategies. A mixed-methods design was chosen for its ability to combine measurable trends with contextual depth. Quantitative data will come from structured surveys (n=50) on Upwork and LinkedIn, while qualitative open-ended responses will capture lived experiences. Expected findings suggest flexibility gains are offset by income instability and algorithmic pressures, especially for creative workers. The study fills the literature gap by providing discipline-specific, contemporary insights and practical recommendations for sustainable remote careers in digital marketing.
