Employers often must undergo the daunting task of eliminating applicants to arrive at a shortlist of candidates best suited for vacancies. The shortlisting process must adhere to fairness, consistency, and strict compliance with the law. Employers may use a different criterion that provides them with the best candidates from many applicants. As Nevada's DHHS deputy director, I would consider the following four criteria: Skills & knowledge, cultural fit, education & training, and competencies. Under skills and knowledge, people have different natural abilities while at the same time, some skills are acquired through education and experience. Both education and experience sum up to knowledge. In this criterion, therefore, candidates' knowledge of the field in which a vacancy is open is a crucial qualification requirement. Skills and knowledge are essential in problem solving and innovation. Apart from skills and knowledge, cultural fit is equally an important criterion to consider. Here, the intention is to determine how the type of candidates that can thrive in the environment provided by Nevada's DHHS.
The third criterion is education and training. The criteria will help assess the applicants' educational background following integrity requirements. Through training, applicants' may enhance or develop skills as part of their career experience. Candidates who have invested time and money to acquire the necessary skills indicate that they are focused on a job that fits their career ambitions.
