Introduction
Institutional and organizational procurement officers must learn and practice the concepts of risk management because it is part and parcel of the requirements of the office. The work of procurement offices is inherently about identifying and mitigating risks which are numerous within the supply chain which if unaddressed, may have a significant impact on the institution or organization’s bottom line.
Risk Management is a Key Aspect of the Procurement Office
Procurement challenges vary based on the line of business, size of the organization, and unpredictable external environment. However, among the most common is risk management which can be consistently found within all businesses regardless of the line of business or the size of the organization.
Regardless of the organization of industry, risk-free businesses do not exist. Even within organizations, every department deals with some form of risks on a daily basis. Risk management may look like a simple process on the surface while realistically speaking, it is a high complex part of the procurement strategy and the overall operational strategy of an organization. Therefore, mitigating and controlling the risks associated with a business is just but one of the key determinants of the organization’s success. To this end, risk management refers to the process in which risks are identified, understood, and graded for better management and preparation of mitigation measures (Kırılmaz & Erol, 2017).
