Pioneers of Oil Painting in Flanders

During the 14th and 15th century Flanders, the pioneers of oil painting were Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden. These were famous painters who developed oil painting after mixing oils from nuts and linseed with different colors. Through their influence, other artists adopted the technique across Europe, especially in countries like Italy (Kleiner). Oil painting is the best because they offer artists greater versatility (Murray). They can be completely opaque or be thinned with different solvents to create diverse transparency levels. Another important aspect is their slow-drying time, allowing painters to rework, correct, or eliminate entire paint areas easily. The pioneering artists produced several notable works.

Jan van Eyck painted The Virgin of Chancellor Rolin, which presents several objects and surfaces. We can see ceramic tiles in the artwork, a crown of gold, flowers, translucent glass, a water body, and a fur-lined robe. It showcases the artist's skill and ability and the details achievable when using oil paint. A closer analysis of the work shows how light reacts on different surfaces. In the painted scene, the virgin presents Christ to a kneeling man as the angel holds a golden crown above her. There is no eye contact between the different characters in the artwork (Murray). It appears as if the artist presented what was in the man’s mind as he was meditating from the book.

Seven Sacraments Altarpiece is an outstanding oil painting by Rogier van der Weyden.
