Automatism is a psychological term that describes body movements that cannot be controlled. Automatism behaviors usually occur in conscious form, for example, sleepwalking. Philip Guston's movie is made up of art and other significant choreographs. In this movie, Guston shows different pieces of art that help the audience to remain engaged. Throughout the movie, we find different paintings with unique textures and messages. There is the integration of automatism and art in the movie, which reflects the singularity of the actor (Guston). Essentially, the film focuses on different styles, but expression dominates the entire film.

Analysis

The Guston movie is composed of dialectics and expressions through the paintings. The entire film shows the work that is fully absorbed. In this case, Guston did not just represent an artwork with no consent but detailed pieces of art. As discussed, automatism is doing things in the conscious mode. There is a close relationship between automatism in the Guston movie and the artwork. For instance, a painting he made showed children fighting in the streets. Although the painting does not have live-action, it has an indirect communication. The painting reflects a scenario of a fight in the streets which can be described as automatism. The expressions on these paintings are indirect but have a great message to the audience. Every artwork in the film is quite engaging and leaves the audience enthusiastic about learning more.
