Reflection on the Implications of Management Decisions
Introduction
After water, coffee is the most consumed beverage, with an estimated daily consumption of 2.25 billion cups worldwide (Poole et al., 2019). This fact makes coffee not just a cultural phenomenon but a global industry. Within this culture, coffee plays a crucial role in dates, initiating and sealing business deals, establishing friendships, relaxing, and simply enjoying multiple tastes and methods of preparation. Further, the consumption of coffee is neither influenced by demographics nor geographical location. From Paris' first cafes of the 17th century to the modern-day fast-food industry, coffee is a cultural omnivore that culturally and economically privileged individuals enjoy (Pomiès & Arsel, 2022). According to Verma (2013), coffee is predominantly an outside drink whose utility derives from emotional, social, and aesthetic roles.
This view of coffee as a cultural and economic phenomenon motivated the desire to run a coffee café. However, establishing a new coffee business from scratch was not realistically possible. This is because of the diverse challenges involved in setting up the business and establishing structures to ensure it runs smoothly. Fortunately, simulation through BizCafe provided an opportunity to virtually implement a coffee café while exploring the dynamics of running a business. According to James and Deighan (2020), BizCafe is a computer simulation that provides lessons about running a business, focusing on the rewards and challenges of making good decisions.
