Illuminated Illustration

The leaf from a book of hours shows Joachim and Anna's refusal of offering at the Temple. The work seems to be unfinished with some parts being sketched by hand while other parts are painted red, gold, and blue. The sketch is full of chaos and disruption with the illustration on the bottom left showing clergymen at the alter while that on the top center shows clergymen removing Joachim from the temple. The illustration on the right shows men and women praying, while some are kneeling to show humility to God. They are also holding their offerings in the form of livestock. The middle of the illuminated manuscript is written in Latin with a small picture on its left, showing a clergyman praying while looking into the heavens. The Latin text is written in the Gothic font, but it is illegible. The boundaries of the leaf from a book of hours are drawn using golden paint.

I chose this illuminated manuscript because the book of hours was one of the most common medieval illuminated manuscripts. Moreover, it is not very easy to find one that is uncompleted. The leaf from a book of hours is attributed to the Rohan Master. This is fascinating, as the Rohan Master is anonymous. He is regarded as one of the first unknown artists with scholars assuming it is a group of illuminators working together in a workshop.
