Game Theory Analysis of Coles and Woolworths

The two firms will not experience mutual growth because based on the game theory, they are competing to keep their clients. Coles (Player A) increased sales due to increased basket size as clients shopped more products per shop. The sales for Woolworths (Player B) increased due to the Lion King Ooshies. The advertisement strategy in both firms creates a regular fluctuation in sales. Woolworths succeeded with the Lion King Ooshies while Coles capitalized on the Little Shop. Woolworths recorded at 7.2% growth, with sales increasing in the second half of the year.

An illustration of the Prisoner’s Dilemma between Woolworths and Coles

There is mutual dependence because an action by one player influences the sales of the other firm. The advertisement battle between the two major grocery players influences how consumers shop in the Australian market. When a particular store is offering more benefits or add-ons per unit item, consumer will prefer buying more from the supplier. The odds are high for Woolworths, they will continue raising their sales with the Lion King Ooshies, as consumers have more collectibles per shopping. The best response to any action by a competitor is deciding or adopting a strategy with the best pay off. Based on the prisoner’s dilemma, I predict that sales value will increase for both players as they realign their advertisement strategy.

Both Woolworths and Coles are playing a game with a dominant strategy equilibrium.
