Factors Contributing to Europe's Absence of Global Digital Champions: A Cross-Sectional Survey Analysis
Overview
This paper investigates why Europe has failed to produce global digital technology champions comparable to the FANGs and BATs despite its economic strength and innovation history. The author proposes a cross-sectional survey research design combined with a 25-year literature review to identify the major factors responsible for Europe's lag in digital innovation.
What this coursework covers
- Research question defining the absence of European digital giants in comparison to USA and China
- Cross-sectional survey research design methodology including sampling strategy and data collection approaches

Research Question and Description
Research Question: What are the factors that have caused Europe not to produce any global digital champions like the FANGs (Facebook, Amazon, Netflix and Google) of the USA and the BATs (Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent) of China.
Although Europe has a long history of innovation and many advantages, it has never produced any global digital platforms that can rival the FANGs and BATs from USA and China respectively. Many of the major technologies originated from outside Europe. Although Europe is considered to be the second-largest economy, after the United States and China, there are no considerations or indications that the country will become a global digital technology giant. There are many factors that have contributed to this trend. In order to determine these factors, it is important to use an effective research design that will give comprehensive and realistic information about this observed trend. As we can see from the research question, the aim is establishing the main factors that might have contributed to lack of global technology innovations within Europe.
Cross-Sectional Survey Research Design
The most effective research design must provide a framework of the research methods and techniques that can be used to address the question. The best research approach is utilizing a cross-sectional survey research design. The cross-sectional survey method is essential because it offers researchers opportunity to understand different factors, and use statistical methods to analyze and draw meaningful conclusions from the research.
