Ethical and Social Impacts of AI on an Organization
Artificial Intelligence is among the newer technologies that business organizations are adopting. Aside from other areas of influence, consideration of AI technologies should also focus on their social and ethical impact.
A critical ethical consideration is that AI can be discriminatory. Since biases already exist in human judgment, they can be reflected in algorithms that power AI capabilities. Bias exists when a machine consistently gives different outputs for one section of people compared to another. Such discrimination may exist along racial, ethnic, and gender lines and strengthen the current stereotypes that affect relations and perceptions of people (Belenguer 780). Thus, the ethical problem here is that AI can enhance discrimination. Another key ethical issue is that AI depends on data gathering (112). Therefore, its adoption may intensify surveillance of employees and customers leading to potential privacy lawsuits.
On the other hand, AI has been deemed an ideal solution to repetitive tasks in workplaces. Hence, it will free up the human workforce to focus on areas where they are well equipped, including places like creativity and innovation (Tomašev, Cornebise, and Hutter). While this seems ideal for organizations, AI poses the danger of people losing their jobs, which may result in social problems, including substance abuse, joblessness, and mental health issues. Furthermore, since AI requires extensive data, it will avail more data to potential hackers.
