Context: | My company had launched a new product in the market, and I was responsible for its sales to meet the company objectives. I had to quickly develop a team and motivate the members to embrace the process. My primary task was to ensure that the campaign became part of the sales team.
Action: | After convening the team, I explained the target breakdown and each person's role in the team. The logic was that each team member had targets to meet because it was part of what the company employed them to do. I shared the consequences of not meeting the target during the meeting, which was still logical.
Result: | Some team members were not bothered about the targets, and the attitude "do your worst" crept into the team. The results were demotivating for me, and thus I had to design another way of enhancing the group's performance. The pressure from the company to do better with the product made me research ways to influence my team to deliver better
Do-Better: | I needed to enhance my power of influence which made me apply the principle of reasoning. I learned that rational persuasion and explaining the targets did not change the team's attitude (HULT International Business School, 2023). Thus, I will discuss rewards in the next meeting to enhance the team's motivation. More Business samples
