Developing Influencing Skills
The purpose of this report is to document my journey in creating and testing learning zone opportunities to develop my influencing skills using the principles of the Working with Influence Model. The report includes the situations I identified, the principles I applied, my approach, and the outcomes I achieved. I also reflect on what I did well and what can be improved next time using the C-A-R-D format.
Situation 1: Persuading a Colleague to Change a Project Deadline
Context: I am working on a group project with a colleague who proposed an unrealistic deadline that could result in a rushed and incomplete project.
Principle: Principle 2: Reciprocity - the idea that people are more likely to comply with a request if they feel that you have done something for them in the past or are likely to do something for them in the future.
Approach: I decided to use the principle of reciprocity to persuade my colleague to change the project deadline. I started by reminding my colleague of when I went out of my way to help them with a project. Then, I suggested that we should work together to set a more realistic deadline that would allow us to produce a high-quality project.
Result: My colleague agreed to change the deadline, and we worked together to set a new one that was more achievable. The quality of the project improved, and we could submit it on time.
