Board of Directors Report
There is stiff competition within the grocery industry, which makes its growth fairly slower. With the lower margins recorded through the years, the industry continues to experience dominance from major brands. As observed from the case study, Whole Foods main strategy is marketing their company as the market leader in natural and organic food supply. Through these incentives, the company is able to maintain a high growth rate from the initial IPO. While there are major brands that have dominated the market such as Walmart and Target, they can never be considered as true competitors because Whole Foods focuses on different customer interests. Walmart focuses on lower income neighborhoods, and does not focus on quality. Whole Foods product niche is expected to grow as people become more health conscious in their diet consumption.
Through the Whole Food’s Moat, the company is able to market and sell high quality products at premium prices. This is achieved through targeting of high-income settlements. When you compare with the competitors, this is a different approach and gives the company a competitive advantage. Product differentiation is also achieved through transparency. Customers understand what they are purchasing from the company. This makes the company reliable and credible to all stakeholders. All these aspects are important in ensuring that there is consistency and value in every strategic action of the company.
Through an evaluation of the margins and ratios, we can see that Whole Foods is operating at higher margins through the period.
