Characteristics of direct vs. indirect expenses and variable vs fixed expense.

Indirect expenses are paid for the purpose of maintaining the business. It makes the business to progress and continue with production of goods and services. They include costs incurred in the payment of rent, electricity, insurance or other utilities (Chambers et al. 2016). On the other hand, direct expenses are traceable to any cost object.

Direct costs are associated with compiling of something. Indirect cost cannot be assigned to such type of analysis since it is used in running of the business. For example the maintenance contract is both indirect cost and fixed cost since it helps the business to thrive and progress. The manager should assign the money for contract to ensure that all production process run effectively.

Unlike direct costs, indirect costs are used irrespective of the level of production or the corporate planning. For example, the manager has to pay for the office rent even if the company is not making production of any good or service. The direct costs might not be catered depending on the status of the company. For example, the company might not hire technical staff if there is no production.

In addition, direct costs are variable while the indirect costs are fixed.
