Business Strategy Analysis of Chipotle Mexican Grill
Introduction
Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) began in 1993 when Steve Ells established it in Denver, Colorado, with only one idea in mind: to serve restaurant-caliber Mexican food at a low cost using fresh and natural ingredients. That initial idea developed into a national institution and a pioneer of the fast-casual food industry over three decades. By the beginning of 2026, Chipotle had over 3,600 restaurants, which are almost all company-owned and located in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and the Netherlands, with more locations planned to open in the Middle East with franchise assistance (Chipotle Mexican Grill, 2025a). Projected revenue of the company stands at about 11.9 billion in fiscal year 2025, with a year-over-year growth of about 5.4 percent, which was attributed to the opening of new units and the development of digital channels.
Chipotle lies in a strategically consequential niche in the wider food service sector. The fast-casual market, which is set apart by more premium food, customized menu structures, and enhanced dining experiences unlike traditional quick-service restaurants (QSR), has expanded significantly in the last ten years. Other competitors in this area are the Qdoba Mexican Grill, CAVA Group, and Sweetgreen, whereas the wider competitive environment is represented by Taco Bell, McDonald’s, and Yum! Brands, which are the QSR giants.
