Case Study: Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Amazon.com incorporated founded by Jeffrey Bezos, is one of the most valuable brands globally. Still, the company started as an online books retailer in 1994 and later expanded to include a myriad of products sold online, such as clothing in 2002, Kindle in 2008, to cite a few (Huckman, Pisano, & Kind, 2012). To fend off competitor entrants, Amazon has invested heavily in building a sophisticated web infrastructure that supports the business. For instance, in 2002, the company released product data that Amazon’s bloggers and website owners can manipulate. Also, through the application of cloud computing, AWS has launched services such as Elastic Cloud Computing (EC2) that provides flexible computing power, and Simple Storage Services (S3), providing developers rent storage capacity they require on servers owned by the company (Huckman, Pisano, & Kind, 2012). Besides, the company allowed developers to avoid fixed costs required in managing personal data centers by operating on a pay-as-you-go basis. Through the mentioned services and technologies, AWS has bettered its competitors.

According to Amazon’s elect CEO, Andy Jassy, patience is crucial in business management (Huckman, Pisano, & Kind, 2012). For instance, to build relations with hardware companies and software companies, Amazon spend more than a decade, but later the company efforts were fruitful. Again, to be competitive, goals are essential in business management. Even with the many critics the company received on AWS, it remained focused and has maximized its profitability.
