A Comparison of Portraits of Louis XIV (1701) And Antoine Watteau's L'indifferent (1716): A Contrast Between Baroque and Rococo Styles
Introduction
During the Renaissance period, many artistic movements and groups shaped the industry. After the period, the Rococo and Baroque movements were created. They had a motive of making the art industry greater and more influential. The Rococo art period emphasized the shift towards ornateness, lightness, and relaxed style, while the Baroque period exemplified formalism and grandiosity. In retrospect, this essay seeks to compare and contrast two pieces of art from the two periods: the portrait of Louis XIV (1701) and Antoine Watteau’s L’indifferent (1716). The analysis will highlight the stylistic elements and themes they focused on while creating the art.
Primary Styles and Composition
The portrait of Louis XIV, which represented the Baroque era, exemplified the formalism and grandeur of the period. The elements of the painting include Louis XIV, the sun King in regal attire. The attire consists of complex drapery and an imposing unique posture. The artist utilized strong contrasts, accentuating the Monarch’s presence and power. Also, the artwork is symmetrical and structured to emphasize the sense of authority and majesty during the Baroque era.
Consequently, L’indifferent by Antoine Watteau, which was painted in 1716, was a representation of the Rococo style.
