Boston Bombings
From the Harvard YouTube video titled ‘The Boston Marathon Bombings: Lessons learned for saving lives,’ the dominant theme is resilience. Historically, terrorist attacks have proven to be a threat to public health. State agencies such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency have primarily focused on the preparedness of public health emergencies. However, the incident of bombing in Boston reflects how first responders go beyond protocols to save lives. For instance, when the blast disrupted communication for the local ambulance systems, ambulance units arrived at the scene without waiting for orders. Moreover, some first responders had to risk their lives for the casualties by quickly entering the accident site without protective gear. Briefings were provided by the Medical Examiner’s Office, which set up a center at a Church to assist. The office worked closely with the Salvation Army, Red Cross, and private volunteers to provide assistance and counseling to the affected. Experts offered stress management and mental care from mental health, fire, and security departments.
Furthermore, the entire emergency team responded promptly and saved lives. These emergency response teams were able to display high degrees of preparedness by handling different types of accidents. These teams were also able to accommodate all casualties and deliver medical services despite limited health facilities. These gestures of resilience proved a high degree of consciousness in hospital and ambulance companies. Health workers and first responders proved that their service to the people is for the right course.
