Childhood obesity is a serious health challenge in the 21st century. The problem has turned to be worldwide, and it has effects on middle and low-income nations, more so in urban locations. The prevalence of this challenge is rising at an alarming rate. Worldwide, in the year 2016, the total number of children who were overweight below the age of five was estimated to be more than 41 million (Powell, 2019). A majority of overweight children below the age of 5 were found in Asia, and the other quarter was found in Africa.

Obese and overweight children are more likely to remain obese into their adulthood and have high chances of developing noncommunicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes at a tender age. Obesity and overweight diseases are, in a big way, preventable. The prevention, however, requires high priority. States that belong to the World Health Organization agreed on a target to stop the rise in obesity and diabetes (Powell, 2019). The agreement was made in the 66th World Health Assembly. It is therefore up to member states to increase their efforts in fighting the scourge.
