Healthcare Systems and Public Health Responses to an Aging Population: The Need for Coordination and Resource Planning

Overview

This paper discusses the growing challenges posed by an aging population and the inadequacy of current healthcare systems to meet their needs. It argues that public health professionals must enhance care coordination, cross-sector collaboration, and prioritize elderly populations, while highlighting California's Master Plan for Aging as an example of proactive policy intervention.

Unit 5 Discussion 2

As the elderly population grows, there is a need for a sustained and improved healthcare system to cater to their special needs. There is a need for an ever-improving quality of life, sufficient social and economic resources, and other amenities essential for the wellbeing of these people. As people live longer, public health organizations are mandated to ensure that they stay healthy and maintain a high quality of life (National Research Council, 2001). The healthcare resources that will be affected by the increasing number of aged people are public hospitals, nursing centers, and the sustainability of pensions and medical insurance plans. The organization is not fully equipped to meet the increasing demand for elderly care. However, the California state government created a Master Plan for Aging which prioritizes and plans for the aging population (Chernof, Lyford, & Langston, 2019). The public health professionals can assist by enhancing care coordination, cross-sector collaboration, and putting the aged people first. If public health systems fail to create incentives for health promotion, there will be increased cases of chronic. Additionally, there will be direct impacts on families, health and social service, as well as effects on governments (Kietzman, 2016).
