Question 1

Outbreak investigation refers to the process of identifying the source of an infectious disease to establish control and implement actions that will prevent future recurrences of the same. The steps in investigating a COVID-19 outbreak are case identification and prioritization, rapid notification of results or diagnosis, case interview, monitoring and isolation of infected individuals, eliciting contacts, case follow-up and medical monitoring, additional case follow-up, and finally, discontinuation of self-isolation (CDC, 2020).

Question 2

The COVID-19 outbreak started in November 2019 in Wuhan, Hubei, China. There have been 104,111,747 reported coronavirus cases in the US (Worldometer, 2021). There are 242,000 cases of COVID-19 specific to my selected community for the Final Project.

Question 3

Some personal characteristics that heighten an individual’s risk of COVID-19 are age and history of chronic diseases (such as diabetes, heart or lung conditions, and weakened immune system). The disease frequency varies by location: densely populated cities are more likely to have higher infection rates than sparsely populated neighborhoods. Jurisdictions that were quick in responding to the pandemic recorded lower cases and mortality rates than those that were slow in implementing local mitigations. The number of confirmed cases and deaths has slowly declined since mid-July 2020, when the pandemic peaked (Huang et al., 2021).

Question 4

The United States federal government and the NYS local government have tried to contain and mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic by implementing widespread lockdowns of all social institutions and venues.
