It is simpler than Bluebook, using a footnote system with minimal punctuation. OSCOLA is used across the UK, Ireland, and many Commonwealth jurisdictions, and is also accepted by many international law journals.

Key OSCOLA Rules

  • Minimal punctuation — OSCOLA deliberately uses less than other styles
  • Case names in italics, year in square brackets [1994] or round (1994)
  • Square brackets when year is essential to find the case; round when not
  • Statute: Short title, year, section number: "Human Rights Act 1998, s 6"
  • Secondary sources: author, title in italics, (edition if applicable, publisher year)
  • Ibid used when citing same source as immediately preceding footnote

OSCOLA vs Other Formats

Bluebook
OSCOLA is the UK equivalent of Bluebook. OSCOLA uses minimal punctuation; Bluebook uses more complex formatting. Accepted in Commonwealth countries
