What Is AMA Citation Style?

AMA (American Medical Association) style is used for medical journals, health profession papers, and biomedical research. Similar to Vancouver in using numbered superscript citations, but with AMA-specific formatting rules for journal names, author names, and publication details. AMA 11th Edition is the current standard.

Key AMA Rules

Superscript numbers in text, in order of appearance
Author names: Last name followed by initials without periods
6 or fewer authors: list all; 7+ list first 3 then "et al."
Journal names italicized and abbreviated per Index Medicus
References numbered, not alphabetical
