Week 6 Assignment Medical
TRICARE is a comprehensive healthcare program administered by the Defense Health Agency for uniformed service members, their families, and other eligible beneficiaries. Participation in TRICARE is available to active-duty service members, retired service members, National Guard and Reserve members (under certain conditions), survivors, former spouses, Medal of Honor recipients and their families, and others registered in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) (TRICARE, n.d.). Eligibility is determined by the sponsor's uniformed service and recorded in DEERS, with family members such as spouses and children also qualifying when properly registered (Defense Health Agency, n.d.). The program offers three primary options for many beneficiaries: TRICARE Prime, TRICARE Extra, and TRICARE Standard. These plans differ in structure, costs, provider choice, and administrative requirements.
TRICARE Prime is a managed care option like a health maintenance organization (HMO). It requires enrollment, assignment to a primary care manager, and referrals for specialty care. The beneficiaries must use network providers for non-emergency care to minimize costs. It features lower out-of-pocket expenses, such as annual enrollment fees for some groups and co-payments, but offers less flexibility in choosing providers.
TRICARE Extra is a preferred provider organization (PPO)-style plan that allows beneficiaries to use network providers for discounted services without referrals in many cases. It has no enrollment fees but includes an annual deductible and higher cost-shares compared to Prime. This option provides more provider choice than Prime while still offering savings through the network.
