Diabetes Care in California In the Context of The African American Cultural Group

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death in California and America. For instance, a 2021 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that over 34 million Americans have a chronic disease. This high prevalence rate is also reflected in California, where approximately 10.5% of the adult population in California (3,209,418 people) have been diagnosed with the disease. The 2021 report also shows that 33.4% of the adult population in the state (10,320,000 people) have abnormally high levels of blood glucose but are not yet high enough to classify as diabetes or what is known as prediabetes. Moreover, the report shows that while 272,814 people in California are diagnosed with the chronic disease (one of the highest numbers of new cases in the country), an additional 884,000 people are not yet aware they have diabetes, thereby exacerbating their health risk (American Diabetes Association, 2021).
