ASA Reading Reflection 3

Many women of color are experiencing the unwelcoming nature of the academic culture. Marginalized groups are dismissed and have very minimal opportunities to participate in the education of the people. The reading presents the struggles women undergo as they seek opportunities in academia (Valverde, 2013). Due to society's gender position, some cannot persevere through the challenges and fight for their rights. Another aspect that I see through the reading is the increasing number of scholars fighting against the learning institutions' social inequalities. The publication reveals and analyzes these systematic inequalities within academia (Valverde, 2013). Through this text, the author mobilizes women to stand up for their rights to fight abusive policies. Another aspect of hope is also seen through the paper as more people set their codes of governing. Still, some forces intended to maintain the status quo and deny women opportunities to progress in their scholarly careers. The reading is a call to action for all people to advocate for women's opportunities and space in academia. There is a need to fight against the opposing forces and ensure equal representation of all genders (Valverde, 2013). The barriers that women of color experience in academia can be eliminated through proactive efforts and advocacy against the status quo.
