Ramadhayani, R. (2018). Symbols of Death Inside of The Lottery by Shirley Jackson (Doctoral dissertation, Indonesian Teknokrat University Library).
Ramadhayani (2018) researched the symbolism in the short story The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. He used the library research and descriptive qualitative method in the research. The story uses several symbols the author employs to communicate to the reader. Ramadhayani says that The Lottery employs several death symbols through themes, characters, images, and the setting. The author notes that Jackson divides the symbols into three forms: myths, connotation, and denotation. The three forms carry different symbols about death and other aspects of the story. According to Ramadhayani, characters like Graves symbolize death. The black spot, the wooden box, and the lottery also symbolize death. Jackson also uses the lottery to represent the hypocrisy of the people in the village. Apart from Graves, Summers, and Deloroix are used symbolically.
