A. DEI Question: As future APNs/educators, what are the strategies that you can use to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in your workplace/practice?

As future Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) and educators, promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace or practice is essential to address systemic racism, reduce health inequities, and foster culturally competent care (Spurlark et al., 2025). One key strategy is integrating DEI principles into daily practice and education by utilizing established resources such as the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) DEI Toolkit. This toolkit provides a foundation for embedding diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) into curricula and professional settings, helping APNs advocate for equitable policies and culturally sensitive care delivery.

In the workplace, APNs can implement practical strategies like developing clear organizational DEI statements, diversifying recruitment and hiring practices to attract underrepresented groups, and establishing community partnerships to build inclusive environments. In addition, providing ongoing cultural competence training, mentorship programs, and creating DEI committees or leadership roles ensures accountability and sustained progress. These efforts help cultivate belonging, improve retention of diverse staff, and enhance patient outcomes by reflecting the communities served.

Lastly, collaboration through professional development, such as symposia or faculty discussions on DEIB integration, raises awareness and equips APNs to navigate challenges like anti-DEIB legislation while advancing inclusive excellence. By actively championing these strategies, future APNs can lead transformative change in healthcare settings.
