The State Reading Standards for Literature in Grade 1

The state reading standards for literature in Grade 1 classes are grouped in four clusters. The first cluster is critical ideas and details in the story or literature. The set involves asking and answering specific questions related to the primary information in the given text. The cluster includes retelling stories, main ideas, and a clear understanding of the lesson or central message. Ultimately, the key concepts and details involve describing characters, main events in the story, applying essential information, and describing the setting. For example, a story with both male and female characters must be clearly illustrated, including names of characters and where the story is taking place.

The second cluster considered in this standard is the crafting and structuring of literature. The collection involves identifying phrases and words in poems or stories that suggest feelings or appeal to Grade 1 students’ senses in the classroom or interior. Another step is explaining the differences between books that tell stories and provide information based on various texts (CPALMS, 2020). In essence, students can read and know the type of book genre on their own. The narrator of the story must be identified at different points in any given text.

The third cluster is the integrating of knowledge and ideas. Illustrations and details are used to describe its characters, events, or setting in a story.
