Family Health Assessment Part 2

The Social Determinants of Health (SDOH)

The social determinants of health (SDOH) for the Indian family significantly affect their health status. The first SDOH for the family is education and literacy. Knowing that they are getting overweight and being educated, they have taken up healthy eating habits and regular exercise. However, their working conditions that keep them both very busy during the week is an SDOH that effects their ability to maintain a regular exercise schedule, further affecting their health and risking getting overweight (Donkin et al., 2018). Additionally, their food choice as an SDOH, owing to them from India, is ailing their health. They eat carbohydrates and proteins for breakfast, rice with vegetables and fish or meat for lunch, and 'roti' with vegetables for dinner.

As such, they are not observing a balanced diet, a factor that may be contributing to their overweight problem. Additionally, an SDOH for Ms. Stacy is her physical and biological condition in that she is pregnant. Therefore, she gets heartburn after eating. Her pregnancy also inflicts stress as an SDOH, which affects her bowel movements. However, they communicate well and thus make personal health choices together as their (SDOH), enhancing their coping skills (Singh et al., 2017). These (SDOH) are prevalent in the family since they are of Indian origin, and thus, they observe much of their culture as an SDOH.
