Adult learning theory explains how adult learning occurs as well as identify the styles appropriate to educate them. There are five main principles that define adult learning. As the concept is applied in businesses to train workers and enhance their skills. People tend to be more independent as they grow older. In this regard, learning in adults must be self-directed rather than instructor-based. All adults have a self-concept of being in charge and take responsibility for their actions. They must be treated as people who can take responsibility to learn effectively. Adults bring experience to learning, which is a resource for the person and those around him or her to learn (NHI, n.d.).

In instructor-based learning, the objectives are to center knowledge on facts and certain subjects. On the other hand, adult learning must be practical and task-based. The skills acquired must be directly applicable in the person’s day-to-day work. There is need for clearly defined elements in the training program so that people can understand why the program is important. When in class, the teacher must be able to show or demonstrate how the course relate to their objectives. The instructors must also outline objectives before the training starts and relate theories to situations students can relate with (NHI, n.d.).
