Integrating Literature and Supplemental Resources to Improve Mathematics Comprehension in Grades K-10
Overview
This paper presents an action plan for integrating literature and supplemental resources into mathematics instruction for grades K-10 students. The plan addresses learning gaps through continuous assessment, utilizes scholarly materials and PHET simulations to enhance conceptual understanding, and proposes specific instructional strategies including a unit on equations and planning within natural disaster scenarios.
What this coursework covers
- Part A: Integrating Literature to Teach Mathematics - objectives for helping grade 10 students grasp mathematics concepts through reading
- Part B: Patterns and Gaps - methods for identifying and addressing learning gaps through RtI assessments and continuous evaluation of learning standards
- Part C: Supplemental Resources - use of scholarly materials and PHET to provide comprehensive understanding with assessment rubrics and standards alignment
- Part D: Topic Ideas - proposed lesson on equations and planning using natural disaster scenarios as context for quantifying variables

Part A
Integrating Literature to Teach Mathematics
Objectives: Help students in grade 10 to grasp the concepts of mathematics quickly through reading. Most students find mathematics difficult since they cannot relate to issues. Therefore, using literature will be a good idea to help learners understand mathematics comprehensively. I will integrate literature in the content area.
Part B
Patterns and Gaps
Objectives and Activities
Grade K-10 students will continue to access the RtI assessments accompanied with continuous assessment. Secondly, the teacher will identify the gaps in learning and improvise methods of merging the gaps in learning. Learning gaps can be described as the difference between what the student has acquired in learning concerning what they are expected to earn. For example, if a student is required to learn all the methods of solving algebra in grade 7 and does not achieve that, it can be called learning gaps.
Rationale
Develop effective methods of identifying learning gaps in grade K-10. Several methods can help identify learning gaps amongst students. Firstly, identify the number of students that require additional help in solving different mathematical problems in class. Typically, students have different degrees of understanding concepts; however, if the number is large (for the students who need help), there is a learning gap. Secondly, evaluate and determine learning standards that were not covered in the previous lesson or year.
