Influences on Population Aging: Healthcare, Lifestyle, and Theories of Healthy Aging
Overview
This paper examines the key factors influencing population aging, specifically healthcare systems and lifestyle factors such as income and political stability. It analyzes two theoretical frameworks—programmed biological theory and activity psychological theory—to explain the aging process and their implications for multidimensional wellness and healthy aging.
What this coursework covers
- Influences on population aging: healthcare system impact on life expectancy and lifestyle factors including income, health, and political stability
- Programmed theory (biological): conceptualizes aging as a predetermined cycle where health deteriorates exponentially, with hormonal and immune systems playing central roles
- Activity theory (psychological): proposes that aging is determined by social activities and engagement throughout the lifespan

Influences that have been Factors in the Aging of the Population
Population change can be described as the process of composition in terms of an age whereby older people increase substantially. Two main factors influence the aging of the population (Australian government, 2016). Firstly, population aging is influenced by the healthcare system, which increases life expectancy. Life expectancy is typical, the average years a person is expected to live. The Healthcare system has a significant impact on the longevity of the people. However, developing countries have the challenge of having high expectancy rates compared to developed countries. Advanced healthcare programs have several benefits to the population, which increases the years of the population. For example, good healthcare helps decrease mortality rates, increasing the expected years for individuals. As discussed, life expectancy differs from one country to another depending on the measures taken to preserve health.
Some countries with the highest expectancy rates include China and Switzerland. The USA has a sound healthcare system, but the life expectancy is still low ranging from 70% to 80% compared to China and Switzerland with 80% plus (Australian government, 2016). Secondly, the aging population is influenced by lifestyle. Lifestyle is a broad term covering income, health, and political stability. In most cases, countries with high income per capita tend to have prolonged lives compared to developing countries. Income distribution amongst population determines the age of the population.
