Impulsivity Management and Persistence as Essential Habits of Mind for Student Success
Overview
This reflection paper examines two key habits of mind from Costa and Kallick's framework of 16 habits: impulsivity management and persistence. The author argues that impulsivity management is essential for effective leadership, while persistence is critical for success in technical disciplines like mathematics and statistics. The paper discusses how both habits can be developed and improved through deliberate practice and strategic effort.

"Describing 16 Habits of mind."
Generally, "habit of mind" means having an intelligent character that can override life challenges. From the "16 Habits of Mind" article, few habits stand out for me, for example, impulsivity management. I have embraced this habit for quite a long time, and it has enhanced my productivity as a leader since it is a habit for problem solvers. Technically, a good leader should think extensively before presenting an action (Costa & Kallick, 2000). Every act or thought has drawn should be deliberate since it is the only entity that separates leaders from followers. However, some leaders cannot manage their impulsivity, thus making inappropriate decisions in their career lives.
Furthermore, there is a space to improve; for instance, take an opportunity to scrutinize the problem presented to you, then make an informed judgment. This process will enhance mental strength, improve patience levels, and up the leadership skills. Secondly, students pursuing mathematics and statistics should have a persistent mind habit. These are technical disciplines that require critical thinking, persistence, and consistency. Many are times when you do not get a solution to a particular problem in class. Still, you will try out with persistent habit until a solution is found. The constant mind habit is backed by Confucius's quote "there is no failure except in no longer trying" by Elbert Hubbard.
Therefore, for anyone to excel in technical subjects, they must acquire the persistent habit because it paves a success path.
