Hilbert's Hotel Paradox from the Perspectives of Potential Infinity and Actual Infinity
Overview
This paper examines Hilbert's Hotel Paradox, a thought experiment introduced by David Hilbert in 1924 that illustrates counterintuitive properties of infinity. The paper analyzes the paradox through two distinct mathematical frameworks: potential infinity, which describes endlessly continuable sequences, and actual infinity, which represents complete infinite sets within defined boundaries.
What this essay covers
- Introduction and explanation of Hilbert's Hotel Paradox with examples of guest accommodation mechanisms
- Analysis of potential infinity as applied to the paradox and its implications for infinite guest arrivals
- Discussion of actual infinity as a framework for understanding finite rooms containing infinite elements

Hilbert’s Hotel Paradox
Introduced by David Hilbert in 1924, the Hilbert's Hotel Paradox (HHP) illustrates infinity's counterintuitive property. It assumes that a hotel has an infinite number of rooms, and they are currently all filled. However, this hotel can still accommodate an endless number of additional guests, a process that can be repeated an infinite number of guests. In the process, the hotel will make an endless number of profits. Essentially, if the hotel has a countably finite number of rooms, all occupied now, one can assume that the hotel cannot take any additional guests. However, once a new guest arrives, the guest in room one can be moved to room two, and the guest in room two will be moved to room 3. The process leaves room one empty for the new guest to fill. Thus, the pattern n+1 is assumed throughout. Apart from a finite number of guests, an infinite number of guests can also be accommodated by moving all guests from room n to room 2n.
Potential Infinity
Potential infinity refers to group things or numbers that can repeatedly continue without termination. In terms of adding numbers, for instance, there will always be another number to proceed with the one before.
