Government Regulation and Occupational Health: Analysis of Asbestos and Diacetyl Case Studies
Overview
This discussion forum examines two occupational health crises: asbestos contamination in building materials and diacetyl-related respiratory illness in food manufacturing. The student analyzes how government regulation, corporate accountability, and political intervention shape worker protection and public health outcomes in both cases.
What this coursework covers
- Asbestos in Building Materials: Questions about measuring asbestos content in construction materials and identifying which materials require examination given health risks; analysis of Zonolite Company's liability
- Diacetyl Case Study: Examination of government position misuse in regulating workplace hazards and constitutional implications for worker rights protection
- Political and Administrative Impact: Discussion of how different presidential administrations affected regulatory enforcement and worker protections

Asbestos
The one best question that I have about asbestos concerns buildings. I learned that asbestos is a material that is even used as part of house building materials after reading the Magic Mineral (Asbestos: a history of the magic mineral - Brachers. 2020). But how do you measure the amount of asbestos used in building the house, and what specific materials need to be examined now that it is a dangerous material? This question is better answered by architects who often propose building materials because they know the composition of the materials and scholars who have researched asbestos.
I think Zonolite Company is responsible for the asbestos contamination, illness as well as the fatalities. Grace acquired the company with the knowledge that it was posing health dangers to the community; this only means that Alley, the former owner of Zonolite, knew of the health risks brought by the company’s operations (Libby, Montana — The Asbestos Outbreak. 2020).
Diacetyl Case
A burning question that I have about the Diacetyl case is about the misuse of government positions. How should the country's constitution be amended to ensure that power and government positions are not used to violate ordinary citizens' rights? Constitution experts should answer this question.
Political powers and governmental positions were extensively used to jeopardize the rights of workers in this case.
