Evidence-Based Practice Implementation and Quality Care Initiatives for Advanced Practice Nurses
Overview
This paper discusses the importance of research and evidence-based practice for advanced practice nurses in delivering safe and effective patient care. The author proposes implementing hourly rounding as an evidence-based policy and examines quality care initiatives such as CUSP, the Michigan Keystone ICU Project, and the On the CUSP: Stop BSI Project to demonstrate how evidence-based interventions improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs.

As an advanced practice nurse (APN), research and evidence-based practice are crucial in delivering safe, effective, and efficient patient care. To set myself apart as an excellent APN, I would consistently demonstrate and utilize these skills in my practice. I would keep up-to-date with current research, critically evaluate evidence, and incorporate it into my clinical decision-making processes. I would also seek continuing education and professional development opportunities to expand my knowledge and skills.
One evidence-based policy that I would like to implement in my practice is the use of hourly rounding. Evidence has shown that hourly rounding by nurses can improve patient outcomes, including reduced falls, decreased call light use, increased patient satisfaction, and enhanced nurse communication and satisfaction (Olrich et al., 2012). To implement this policy, I would work through my organization's structures to obtain feedback from staff and leadership. I would present the evidence behind hourly rounding, address any concerns or challenges, and collaborate with staff to develop an implementation plan. This could include developing educational resources, creating a standardized rounding tool, and regularly evaluating and adjusting the process.
An example of a quality care initiative from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) website is the Comprehensive Unit-Based Safety Program (CUSP). CUSP is a framework for improving patient safety culture and reducing hospital harm (AHRQ, 2021). By implementing CUSP, organizations can engage frontline staff, identify and prioritize safety issues, and implement evidence-based interventions.
