Deforestation in the Amazon: Causes, Consequences, and Solutions for Forest Protection
Overview
This paper examines the escalating deforestation crisis in the Amazon rainforest, citing a loss of 865,000 acres and attributing it to illegal logging, mining, and land grabbing. The author proposes three primary solutions: supporting indigenous communities with resources for sustainable living and land protection, reducing global dependence on wood and paper products, and addressing the cattle industry's land consumption demands.
What this essay covers
- Introduction to Amazon deforestation crisis and its impact on climate change and water resources
- Analysis of deforestation causes: illegal logging, mining, land grabbing, and cattle ranching
- Proposed solutions including indigenous community support, reduced wood/paper consumption, and addressing beef industry expansion

Article: Londoño, E. (June 2020). Amazon Deforestation Soars as Pandemic Hobbles Enforcement. The New York Times. Retrieved from https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/06/world/americas/amazon-deforestation-brazil.html
Deforestation in Amazon is increasing, with an estimation of 865,000 acres having been deforested. For many years, deforestation has been known to cause climate change and deplete water resources. Londoño (2020) noted that deforestation has been increasing as illegal loggers, miners, and land grabbers are clearing vast areas across the Amazon. This is a tragedy if drastic solutions are never developed in order to tame the increasing depletion of the natural rainforest. As climate change effects increase, there is a need to develop effective measures to ensure that the forest is protected.
First, in order to prevent illegal farming, logging, and clearing of land, there is a need to support indigenous communities to have sustainable living. There is a need to provide resources that will enable the organizations to protect their regions and expose destructive corporations and loggers within the region. Second, deforestation happens because people depend on wood for various life activities. One of the main approaches to tame deforestation is reducing the dependence on wood and paper. This will reduce the market for illegal loggers, which will indirectly tame the expansion of the forest. Another major contributor to deforestation is over-dependence on beef. Raising cattle for beef requires massive tracts of land, which forces corporations and individuals to grab the land within the forest.
When these issues are addressed, the deforestation will be tamed, and the forest will thrive again.
