Coupling and Cohesion in Object-Oriented Modelling and Design

Overview

This paper examines the fundamental concepts of coupling and cohesion in object-oriented modelling and design. It defines coupling as the degree of interdependence between software modules and cohesion as the intra-dependency among elements within a single module, explaining how understanding these concepts enables the development of manageable, scalable, and extensible systems.

Object-Oriented Modelling and Design

  1. Define and explain the concepts of coupling and cohesion in object-oriented modelling

Coupling and cohesion are the two terms that are often misunderstood in the field of computing. Both terms are usually used to indicate a qualitative analysis of a modulatory system. In the end, they help identify and measure the complexity of designs of object-oriented systems. However, a good knowledge of both coupling and cohesion helps build a system that is manageable, scalable, and can be extended over an extensive period. Still, coupling and cohesion differ in several ways. Their concepts are also related to both poor and good software designs. In particular, they impact software designs.

Coupling can be defined as the degree of interdependence that is there between software modules and jointly, they are to each other. In particular, coupling is a strength that exists between software modules. The greater interdependence between the modules is made possible by high coupling; that is, modules cannot function without each other. Subsequently, coupling has different dimensions that include content coupling, common coupling, stamp coupling, control coupling, and data coupling (Sethi and Rathore 2016). In content coupling, particular modules can access and modify other module’s content. For instance, when a parameter is passed by a specific component so that their activity s controlled, a control coupling takes place between the two components.
