Application to Spalding University

Spalding University and I possess a common mission of facilitating a diverse community of learners dedicated to addressing current issues through quality undergraduate and graduate liberal and professional studies and in the spiritual values of the institution’s founders, with particular focus on service and the promotion of peace and justice. The primary reason why I identify with the campus’ mission and why I am keen on DSW course at the institution because it relates to my experience as an immigrant in America. I am originally from Kenya and while I have lived in America long enough to establish a professional career in substance use and mental health counseling. I have always appreciated the sense of community I got during my residence in Baltimore. I have made huge strides in my professional advancement (I will be graduating with a Master of Social Work (MSW) from Catholic University this May) but I will always tie my personal achievements to the shared sense of community in Baltimore.

The feelings of belonging and mattering to my local community instilled a sense of purpose and perseverance in my career goals. While the immigrant experience is credited with shaping strong and resilient individuals who remain passionate and determined even in the face of adversity, I think that community is often overlooked in discussions about immigrant success. Immigrating to America was not an easy process and my desire to achieve the American dream has always being the driving force in my professional development.
