Chlorhexidine Antiseptic Wipes Versus Water and Soap for Catheter-Acquired Urinary Tract Infection Prevention in Pediatric Oncology

Overview

This capstone project outlines a strategic plan for investigating the effectiveness of Chlorhexidine antiseptic wipes compared to water and soap in controlling catheter-acquired urinary tract infections among pediatric oncology patients at Driscoll's Children's Hospital. The project employs evidence-based practice methodology using a PICOT question framework to guide literature review and primary research analysis.

Capstone Project Strategic Plan

Capstone projects are vital to sum up the competencies and skills students gain throughout a course. Such projects can be presented in various forms, including research papers, case studies, and surveys (Ford & Melnyk, 2019). In the current case, the presentation is expected as a research paper. The research is based on the PICOT question: Among children admitted in the pediatric oncology at Driscoll's Children's Hospital, are Chlorhexidine antiseptic wipes compared to water and soap wash more effective in controlling catheter-acquired urinary tract infection for six months of hospital admission? In this view, the current brief highlights the strategic plan for this project.

The core aspects of the strategic plan include topic choice (based on PICOT), development of a project proposal based on the PICOT, gathering information, establishing a structure, writing, text proofreading, and preparation for the defense of the project content. So far, the first two aspects have already been realized. Hence, the essential part of the strategic plan is gathering information that either informs or debunks the potential outcomes of the PICOT question (Torres, 2022). So, a review of the latest literature on the topic and primary research focusing on nurses or physicians working in health facilities where prevention of HAI is prioritized as a quality and safety care incentive.

All the information gathered must be properly outlined to provide logic and relevance to the project.
