MHA5020 is the culminating experience of Capella's Master of Health Administration program — students select a real healthcare problem, analyze relevant data, and develop evidence-based recommendations that demonstrate mastery across three competency areas: transformation, execution, and people.
Integrating MHA competencies into a capstone
Core topics
- Healthcare problem selection: Identifying and framing a significant healthcare administration problem for capstone investigation
- Data analysis: Analyzing data relevant to the selected problem using the analytical skills developed across the program
- Evidence-based recommendations: Developing actionable recommendations grounded in evidence and data analysis
- Competency demonstration: Integrating transformation, execution, and people leadership competencies into the capstone deliverable

Frequently asked questions
The capstone is designed as an integrative demonstration of every competency the MHA program builds — transformation, execution, and people leadership. Each of these areas is developed in specific earlier courses (quality and compliance, data analysis, leadership, change management, etc.), and the capstone asks students to apply them simultaneously to a real healthcare problem. That's only meaningful once the full curriculum is complete, which is why Capella requires all required and elective coursework as a prerequisite and doesn't accept a capstone from another institution as a substitute.
