Unintended Adverse Consequences of Computerized Provider Order Entry Systems in Healthcare

Overview

This essay examines the unintended adverse consequences of Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) systems in medical institutions. The paper discusses how CPOE, despite being designed to improve patient safety and reduce costs, creates increased workload for clinicians through complex system navigation and workflow inefficiencies, and identifies workflow dysfunction and system integration issues as key problems.

Unintended Adverse Consequences

Computerized provider order entry is the process used by medical staff such as clinicians, nurses, physicians and Laboratory technicians to directly record medical information directly into the application of the system (Campbell, 2006). This system is widely used in large medical institutions to offer direct access to patient information amongst many users at the same time. Medical organizations use CPOE to improve safety in medication and reducing healthcare costs. In this essay, strategies and recommendations for implementing Unintended adverse consequences to implement new standards are discussed.

More work for clinicians is one of the unintended adverse consequences where CPOE creates more work for medical staff. Although CPOE's goal is to provide a good patient overview and make the workflow for clinicians to be easier for access, the same system has complications of adding more work by requiring medical staffs to enter more function keys to get access to the kind of information needed. When CPOE systems are mistakenly integrated with other medical information system makes it difficult for medical staffs to log in to different medical information assessment. So, if additional function keys are added such as copy and paste will enhance easier access to the system.

The unfavorable workflow also contributes to the flow of the unintended adverse consequences. Some CPOE systems at a time may experience dysfunction, confusing some word prompt to another.
