Theraplay Treatment Model

This is an approach to child and family therapy to address the emotional developmental, and behavioral issues. The goals are improving the relationship between the parent and the child through healthy interactions and play. It is an evidence-based approach that enhances the "attachment, engagement, self-esteem, and trust in others" (Rubin, 2012, p. 105). It can be used in diverse settings to enhance how parents and children relate.

There are several scenarios where the model can be applied. In Child Care Global, we are focused on giving children and parents Theraplay sessions to enhance their coping abilities with developmental challenges. For children who are overreactive or lacks confidence, we schedule sessions that involve both parents and children. I am a therapist with Child Care Global, and every session has two therapists. Child Care Global is focused on assisting households with children experiencing social, psychological, and educational challenges to cope build constructive relationships that mitigate adverse outcomes.

One of the therapists is directing the parent what they should do, and the other works closer to the child. The agency's role is to create an environment where the child and parent can engage in mutually beneficial activities. The parent and child participate in activities that foster feelings of safety, warmth, self-confidence, and comfort. The model works by ensuring that both parents and children understand their roles in building a healthy relationship.
