Chapter 1: Introduction
Universities and colleges have unique roles in assisting society to achieve sustainable development. The student role in the sustainable development agenda cannot be underestimated, which calls for the need to actively engage, define, and allocate certain roles to students while they are learning. This will enhance the interdisciplinary approach towards core issues related to environmental sustainability and warrant the success of the different initiatives created to enhance sustainable living. Education plays an important role in achieving sustainable living. The education for sustainable development (ESD) promotes the development of skills, knowledge, values, as well as actions that are needed in the creation of a more sustainable world.
Malala Yousafzai said that “All sustainable development goals come down to education.” In this regard, education is a significant aspect to enhance awareness and cultivate a comprehensive understanding of the issues affecting society. With the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which is a plan for action for humanity, the planet, and universal prosperity, education is more vital than ever. It is impossible to achieve sustainable development without the inextricable link between education and sustainability.
