Statistical Analysis of Patient Satisfaction and Hospital Length of Stay Using SPSS: Summary Statistics, Scatter Plots, and Distributional Analysis
Overview
This exercise demonstrates fundamental statistical analysis techniques using SPSS software, analyzing patient satisfaction ratings and hospital stay duration through descriptive statistics and data visualization. The coursework covers two parts: examining the relationship between patient satisfaction and time in hospital through summary statistics and scatter plots, then analyzing a separate dataset using box plots and histograms with comprehensive interpretation of descriptive statistics including mean, standard deviation, and variance.
What this coursework covers
- Part 1: Summary statistics for patient satisfaction and hospital time data with descriptive analysis of sample distribution, ranges, means, and standard deviations
- Scatter plot visualization showing the relationship between time spent in hospital and patient satisfaction ratings
- Part 2: Box plot and histogram generation for frequency distribution analysis of a 19-value dataset
- Detailed interpretation of descriptive statistics including range, variance, standard error, and deviation measures

SPSS Exercise
- Part 1: Summary Statistics and Scatter graphs
A researcher has carried out a study and obtained in-patient satisfactory ratings (where higher scores denote higher satisfaction rates). Also, the researcher has documented the length of time the patients have been in the hospital in days. The following table presents the data.
Patient Satisfaction | Time in Hospital |
7 | 14 |
4 | 12 |
6 | 6 |
3 | 1 |
2 | 3 |
2 | 6 |
5 | 8 |
6 | 6 |
7 | 9 |
2 | 1 |
The following is an SPSS Output showing summary statistics for the data.
Descriptive Statistics
N | Minimum | Maximum | Mean | Std. Deviation
Patient satisfaction | 10 | 2 | 7 | 4.40 | 2.066 |
Time in Hopsital | 10 | 1 | 14 | 6.80 | 4.341 |
Valid N (listwise) | 10 | ||||
The SPSS output table above shows that the population sample is 10. Therefore, only 10 respondents who participated in the interview. Besides, the values of the patient satisfaction rate range between 2 and 7, 2 being the minimum value and 7 being the maximum value. Moreover, the values of time in hospital stay range from 1 to 14. 1 is the minimum value while 14 is the maximum value. patient satisfaction variable has a mean of 4.40, indicating that on average patient’s satisfaction will always be 4.40. As well, the time in hospital has a mean of 6.8 denoting that on aggregate, patients spend 6.8 hours in the hospital.
The following is a scatterplot for the time spent in hospital and patient satisfaction.
- Part 2: Generating Box Plot and Histogram
The following data is used to generate a box plot and a histogram.
12, 13, 13, 15, 15, 15, 15, 16, 16, 17, 17, 17, 17, 18, 18, 19, 20, 32.
The following is a box plot for the data.
