Spring Seasons in the Peony Pavilion

The Peony Pavilion, also known as the Return of Soul at the Peony Pavilion, is a romantic tale about, Liu Meng and Du Liniang. The novel was composed by Tang Xianzu in 1598. The plot of the novel was based on the short story, Du Liniang Revives for Love. The narration centers on the love story between the two main characters, and how love overcomes all challenges, including, time, space, life, and death to become a reality.

Du Liniang becomes romantic and feels that Liu Meng is the right person she should relate with. A series of events and scenes revolve around the relationship between the two. The Peony Pavilion revolves around seasonal occasions. For instance, the season of Spring is mentioned in several cases to bring the story plots into a more synthesized and understandable manner. We learn of the “return of the soul,” where a lady resurrects during the Spring season to reunite with the man she had admired for a long time.

Summer is also a symbolic representation and brings about the theme and aspect of time. Before she dies, the lady admires the young man who is a scholar, but unfortunately, she dies before her dream becomes a reality. Luckily, they reunite. First, the man meets the lady in spirit form. Du Liniang shows her willingness to utilize the beauty of her youth by falling in love with a man.
