Question 1

Relating alcoholism to social inequality on micro and macro levels is a common phenomenon that has gained attention over the years. Social inequality on micro and macro level perpetuates alcoholism in different ways. A study by Grittner et al. (2013) reveals on a macro level, a consistent pattern from their study was that people with higher social-economic status are “more often drinkers and drink smaller amounts more frequently, whereas those in lower SES groups have a higher proportion of abstainers but those who do drink do so more often in a problematic way.” Factors considered to lead to this relation are employments status, people of higher social-economic classes have good employment that gives them good earning, presenting them with the ability to have enough money to spare. Low social-economic classes have low chances of affording alcohol due to low income. Also, it is perceived that education is enlightenment that saves most people of higher social-economic status from problematic drinking like in the case of low social-economic partners.

Question 2

Discrimination is a major detriment of social equality. Discrimination of individual is the prejudicial treatment of an individual base on their supposed affiliation to a given group. Individual discrimination, as well as institutional discrimination, encourages social inequality. Individual discrimination in places of work, for instance, discourages or harms the feeling of others.
