Should There Be Conscription in The Modern World?
Conscription refers to the mandatory enrolment into military service. Serving in the military requires a high-level discipline and commitment. Some governments around the world have seen this as an opportunity to enhance discipline to their citizens. There are policies for compulsory enrolment into the armed forces, making conscription a modern way of strengthening civic responsibility and discipline.
Conscription incorporates aspects of national building and civic responsibility (Max Margulies, 2018). Although countries like the United States use all-volunteer forces’ programs, several countries maintain conscription because of the associated benefits. Switzerland is an excellent example of a country that has successfully maintained conscription programs. The significant gains in this program are that people learn a wide range of impactful studies through conscription, crime management, career opportunities, psycho health, and discipline.
In the modern world, conscription can be a crucial driver for development. Nation-building can be achieved, mainly if conscription is applied under policies that promote political stability, peace, and economic prosperity (Nina Nasr, 2021). Diverse countries like Singapore and Switzerland have normalized conscription programs because their policies are centered on political stability and economic growth, but not the interests of individual groups.
With increased diversity in contemporary society, conscription can enhance development. Political integration of various ethnic groups through conscription will help bring peace and boost the security of respective territories (Nina Nasr, 2021). When peace and political stability prevails, economic growth becomes a reality.
